05.07.13Met Gala 2013

Ah, the Met Gala. The annual Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art remains the hottest, most elusive, most impossible-to-attain ticket in town. Known as the fashion industry’s most glamorous and star-studded night of the year, celebrities, models, designers, and singers all graced the red carpet in their best-dressed.

The Met is just a few blocks away from my apartment, so after work I took a walk by the museum on 5th avenue to see what I could see. Around 6:00 p.m. the huge tent canopy over the famous Met steps was up with the red carpet laid out and hundreds of photographers lining the steps, ready for their shot at the stars. Here’s a picture from my view from across the street on 5th Avenue.

This year’s extravaganza was influenced by the punk rock theme, coinciding with with Costume Institute’s “PUNK: Chaos to Couture” exhibition. While watching some of the red carpet arrivals, it was clear that the punk theme was loosely and widely interpreted. However, based on my incredibly subjective and amateur thoughts on couture punk, here are my favorite looks from the night.

Kate Bosworth

Anne Hathaway

Blake Lively

Emma Watson

On the men’s side, my favorite look of the night went to Frank Ocean. I even loved his studded shoes to pull in the punk. But Gerard Butler made quite the dapper appearance, as well.

Which looks were your favorites? Did you like the punk theme? How would you interpret “punk” into a black tie look?
